unthinkable tranldy in newtown, president obama spoke to the country and he asked us, are we doing enough to protect our children? the answer he admitted is no. and that must change. that is why we are here today. today's hearing we'll hear from people who deal with the effects of gun violence every day. the wide range of experience and expertise from these panelists will facilitate a discussion on the common sense and constructive steps we must take to ensure these sorts of tragedies will never happen again. i have a letter from the teachers of newtown which i will enter into the record, but i will just share with you one sentence, and it reads, in our schools we need to strike the right balance to ensure that schools are nurturing while also safe. and we need to strike the right balance so that schools do not become armed for tresses -- fortresses where kids aren't able to be kids. the voice of educators is critical to ensuring that we find and maintain this balance between safety and learning. as we move forward during this difficult time, collaboration, communication, valuing the voic

america. as president obama so eloquently said at the -- said the sunday after the tragedy in newtown, which shook the conscience of this country and which we all still and continue to mourn and our our -- offer our dnd and of our condolences to the friends and family well, cannot accept the violence, the president said. this is visited on children year and year and somehow it's the price of freedom. we cannot accept this. we cannot accept one more innocent life being lost to violent. not one in newtown, not one in chicago. or cleveland. not one in oakland, california. not one in any more towns, in any city, in any school, in any theater or in any place of worship new york any mall or in any of our neighborhoods. we have an obligation to our children to ensure that newtown marks a turning point that made us finally say enough is enough. we must come together to build an america where our children do not have to live in fear and where they do have a future. last week, i was at an event in my district in west oakland. it was the unveiling of a mural, painted by several talented young ar

[inaudible question] >> both the bidens and the obamas will participate on saturday. that will be here in the metro area. we have a number of cabinet officials that will be participating and we will be making announcements on that in the coming days. as you know, odds are you will know when it happens, but they will be doing something and that will be the entire family. >> just a follow-up on the fundraising question, if you have leftover funds, where do you plan to use those funds? presidential library? >> you know, i can honestly i don't know. there are rules that regulate what we can and can't do with those funds. i know some funds were used to do repairs on the national mall through the association that governance the national mall. that's a bridge we'll cross when we come to it. but there are a number of civic-minded things to do if we are lucky to have access funds when it is all said and done. >> cn

president obama's nominee for defense secretary chuck hagel. our guest are steve clemens followed by a look at emerging marths in developing countries. we'll discuss his book break out nations. washington journal, live at 7:00 eastern on c-span. >> if you ask how many themselves identify as lib tarnse. depending on which poll you look at you might get 10 to 15%. if you give people a battery of questions like do you believe in x or y and you track those, depending on which poll you are looking at you get as many as 30% of americans calling themselves libertarian. if you ask are you economically conservative but socially liberal you get half of americans saying that's what they are. just because people say these things doesn't mean they believe them. if you ask most americans do you want smaller government, they say yes. but then if you ask them to cut any particular item on the budget, they don't want to cut anything. so it's not clear if they really believe anytime. based on the best data i have in writing this book i'd say as low as 10% and as high as 30%. lib tarnse if they were lib
